Travis County is transitioning to a new alert system for wildfire-related notifications, aiming to better inform residents during periods of elevated fire risk. The new service, provided through Warn Central Texas, replaces the county’s previous phone call-based system.
How to Sign Up
Residents can opt in by texting TCBURNBAN to 888777. Once subscribed, users will receive text notifications when:
Burn bans are issued or lifted
Red Flag Warnings are in effect
Wildfire conditions significantly increase
This system is distinct from emergency alerts, which are sent automatically. Wildfire and burn ban alerts now require explicit signup to receive updates.
Why the Change Matters
Travis County officials say the change will streamline communication and improve public safety by centralizing alerts through Warn Central Texas, a regional emergency notification system. The move is especially timely—more than half of all structures in the Austin metro area sit in wildfire-prone zones, according to wildfire planning data.
The alert system is intended to give residents faster, clearer guidance on fire risks, helping people prepare and respond appropriately when conditions change.
Looking Ahead
As the summer heat intensifies and drought risks persist, county officials urge residents to take a proactive approach. Signing up for alerts is one step in building community resilience during wildfire season.
