Why it matters: If you've driven through Cedar Park, you know the frustrating choice: pay for 183A Toll or detour through city streets adding up to 20 minutes to your commute. TxDOT is changing that with new frontage roads connecting Whitestone Boulevard (RM 1431) to Avery Ranch Boulevard along the toll road.
By the numbers: The approximately 3-mile project will add two free lanes on each side of the existing 183A Toll road, creating a non-tolled alternative for local travel. These frontage roads will serve as a relief route when the toll road is closed for maintenance or incidents while improving mobility and safety in the corridor.
The big picture: Population growth continues to increase throughout central Texas, putting pressure on existing transportation infrastructure. Traffic volumes are expected to increase by roughly 25% along the 183A corridor over the next 25 years, according to Federal Highway Administration figures. This project represents a significant investment in addressing regional congestion.
Between the lines: The frontage roads will effectively reconnect eastern and western parts of Cedar Park, allowing motorists to avoid the longer routes currently required when traveling across the city. The Capital Area Metro Planning Organization (CAMPO) has committed $75 million to fund the project.
What's next: Construction timelines will be announced soon. Once complete, residents will have a choice between the faster tolled route or the free frontage roads, providing flexibility based on your time constraints and budget.
