🏗️ Leander Union nears the finish line

We’re lucky to have so many wonderful libraries nearby, but the Liberty Hill Public Library has always held a special place in our family’s heart.

It may be one of the smaller libraries in the area, but they pack an incredible amount of programming into the space. We’ve enjoyed crafts, activities, performances and special events for kids, along with plenty of options for teens and adults too.

Their summer reading program is an especially big deal in our house. It keeps the kids excited and motivated to read every day, and Noelle and Charlie were thrilled to visit the prize store last week and pick out their rewards.

The LHPL may be small, but it has so much heart. If you’re looking for an easy outing with the kids, put it on your list. We’re very thankful to have this little library in our community!

Also, TJ is hosting another AI IRL meetup next Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Pinthouse Pizza in Round Rock. He wanted to bring this one to Round Rock, but he’d love to see plenty of Leander neighbors there too! It’s a casual meetup for local business owners, builders, creatives and anyone curious about practical ways to use AI. No technical experience is required.

The Gist: Leander Union is getting close to the finish line along Crystal Falls Parkway. The nearly 155,000-square-foot development will spread more than 40 suites across 10 buildings, with room for restaurants, shops, offices and plenty of outdoor gathering space. Northpoint Austin Church is already holding Sunday services in its nearly 40,000-square-foot space, with a grand opening planned for Aug. 9. Westlake Dermatology is expected to open there in September.

Why It Matters: This could give nearby neighbors a new place to grab dinner, browse a few shops, meet for coffee or simply sit outside without making the longer drive into Austin. More than 65,000 square feet is planned for retail and restaurants, and while most future businesses have not been announced, there should be plenty to watch as Leander Union starts filling up.

The Gist: SafeSplash Swim School is diving into Cedar Park this fall at 410 W. Whitestone Blvd., near Bell Boulevard. The new indoor school will offer small-group lessons for everyone from babies and first-time swimmers to adults, plus clinics and team prep for kids ready to sharpen their strokes.

Why It Matters: With a heated indoor pool and year-round classes, local families will have another nearby option for building confidence in the water, whether that means mastering a back float, getting comfortable putting a face underwater or preparing for swim team. The location is currently expected to open in late 2026, pending construction.

The Gist: Texas’ annual back-to-school Sales Tax Holiday runs Aug. 7–9, allowing shoppers to skip the sales tax on most clothing, footwear, student backpacks and certain school supplies priced under $100. You do not have to be a student or parent to take advantage of the savings.

Why It Matters: Back-to-school lists have a way of adding up quickly, especially when you’re shopping for more than one student. A few dollars saved on new clothes, shoes and supplies can help take a little pressure off the budget before the first day of class arrives.

The Pulao Company recently opened on Ronald Reagan Boulevard, specializing in pulao, a seasoned one-pot rice dish made with vegetables, chicken, goat or other proteins. Diners can choose from several regional versions, along with biryani, naan, soups and vegetarian dishes.

The menu also includes Indian appetizers, fresh juices, chai and falooda, a chilled dessert drink. It’s a new option for anyone curious to explore South Indian cooking or simply looking for a hearty rice-based meal.

Leo’s FunZone opened May 23, bringing Leander a locally owned indoor play space, craft studio and toy store. The space includes a toddler area, wooden play buildings for children under 6 and craft and DIY areas for older kids.

Activities include handmade crafts, Legos, puzzles and a 3D printer, along with a curated selection of toys available in the store and online. The owners built much of the space themselves and used wood, natural materials and muted colors to create a calmer feel than many indoor play places.

Families can purchase day passes or memberships, and members receive access to events such as free movie nights. Leo’s also hosts private birthday parties that reserve the entire space, while a quiet nursing room and complimentary drinks add a few thoughtful touches for parents.
