District posts strong results in reading, math, and science

Leander ISD students outpaced the state average in all tested subjects and grade levels on the spring 2025 STAAR exams, according to results released June 17 by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The comparison is based on the “approaches grade level” standard, which indicates a student is likely to succeed in the next grade with targeted academic support. This is considered a passing score.

Year-over-Year Progress

Leander ISD showed year-over-year improvements in several subject areas. Math scores increased in 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Third grade math held steady at 76 percent, while 5th grade math declined from 81 percent to 75 percent.

Reading scores remained consistent or improved in most grades. The only drop came in 5th grade reading, which fell three percentage points to 86 percent. Science scores also rose slightly, with 8th grade improving by one point and 5th grade by two points compared to the previous year.

Statewide, reading scores rose across nearly all grade levels. Science scores also showed notable improvement. Math scores were mixed, with some grades improving and others declining.

“These results are encouraging and reflect the impact of the strategic supports we’ve implemented in recent years,” said Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath. He noted that statewide reading scores have now surpassed pre-pandemic levels, but acknowledged that more work is needed in math.

District Ratings and Accountability

In April, the TEA released the long-delayed 2023 A–F Accountability Ratings after legal challenges had postponed their publication. Leander ISD received an overall “B” rating, earning 88 out of 100 possible points.

Of the 45 campuses in the district that were rated, 17 received an A, 19 earned a B, six received a C, and three received a D. No campuses were rated F.
