The Leander Police Department has launched a new public scanning station to help reunite lost pets with their owners. Installed outside the police department building at 705 Leander Drive, the station allows residents to scan found animals for microchip identification without needing to go inside or wait for assistance.
The device is located to the left of the building’s front entrance and includes step-by-step instructions. Users simply wave the scanning wand over the pet until a microchip ID number appears.
First of its kind in the area
This is the first self-service microchip scanning station available to the public in the region, according to Leander police. The goal is to provide a quick and accessible way for community members to assist in reuniting pets with their families.
City officials said additional stations are planned across Leander, expanding the effort to support lost and found pet recovery throughout the area.
By allowing the public to directly scan pets for microchip data, the system helps reduce strain on shelters and speeds up the reunion process. The department hopes this simple and accessible tool will encourage more people to take action when they find a lost animal.
