Leaders celebrate project kickoff

Officials from Williamson County, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the City of Leander, and U.S. Rep. John Carter joined community members on Jan. 29 to mark the start of construction on the Hero Way (RM 2243 Phase 1A) expansion project. The event launched the first phase of a multi-stage effort to reconstruct and widen the roadway to meet the region's growing transportation needs.

Phase 1A details

Phase 1A covers the section from 183A to Garey Park. From 183A to Ronald Reagan Boulevard, the project follows the existing alignment. From Ronald Reagan Boulevard to Garey Park, the road will follow a new alignment. This phase will include a single three-lane frontage road handling two-way traffic until the second frontage road is added in a future phase.

Full corridor vision

The completed project will transform Hero Way into a controlled-access highway with two main lanes in each direction separated by a concrete barrier. Three-lane frontage roads will provide access on either side of the main lanes, with direct connections to 183A, Ronald Reagan Boulevard, and the Southwest Bypass. Additional phases will be completed as growth and funding allow.

Safety and mobility improvements

The project aims to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and support future growth. Upgrades include additional lanes to increase capacity, realignment and straightening of curves, and enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The project is part of Williamson County’s Long-Range Transportation Plan.

Funding and long-term impact

Funding comes from the City of Leander, federal transportation dollars, and voter-approved road bonds. County leaders and project partners emphasize the long-term commitment to prioritizing road infrastructure to meet the needs of Williamson County’s rapidly growing population.
