Financial relief for families
Governor Greg Abbott visited Leander on September 17 to distribute aid to families whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the catastrophic July 4 floods. The financial assistance comes from the Vaqueros del Mar Texas Flood Relief Fund, supported by proceeds from the “Strait to the Heart” benefit concert held earlier this summer.
A message of support
“We know you've been challenged in extraordinary ways,” Abbott told families during the event. “We want to be able to be a part of the process, not just now but in an ongoing way, to help you respond to those challenges. The financial assistance you leave with today will help you deal with the devastation left behind by the flooding. Our hope is that this check will assist you all in a meaningful way in the rebuilding process.”
The governor was joined by Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd at the presentation.
How the funds were raised
The July concert, hosted by country music legend George Strait and Estancia Estates founder Tom Cusick, raised more than $6 million to support Texans impacted by the floods. The event marked the third time Abbott has personally attended a check distribution ceremony for storm victims.
Rebuilding in progress
Abbott’s visit follows his earlier appearance in the area last month, when he announced the reopening of the Cow Creek bridge that had been destroyed during the floods. Local leaders say these steps are vital for recovery as families work to rebuild homes and restore normalcy in the community.
