What was approved
Leander City Council approved a license agreement with GFiber at its Jan. 15 meeting, clearing the way for the company to build a fiber optic network within the city’s public right of way. The agreement allows GFiber to install, maintain and operate its infrastructure throughout Leander.
City officials said the move supports the city’s continued growth as more residents and businesses move to the area.
What GFiber will offer
GFiber, formerly known as Google Fiber, plans to provide high speed, high bandwidth internet service to Leander homes and businesses. According to the company, available service options will include 1 Gig, 3 Gig and 8 Gig plans. GFiber said its service does not include data caps, equipment fees or annual contracts.
City leaders said the addition gives residents more choices for internet service as demand for reliable connectivity continues to increase.
What city leaders said
Mayor Pro Tem Na’Cole Thompson said access to fast and reliable internet is important as Leander continues to grow. She said the arrival of GFiber adds options for families and businesses and supports the city’s long term economic development.
GFiber officials said Leander’s location and economic activity made it a good fit for expansion. The company said it looks forward to working with the city to bring service to the community.
Timeline and next steps
GFiber is currently in the design and engineering phase of the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with service becoming available in stages as portions of the network are completed.
Residents who want updates on availability can sign up through GFiber’s website.
The expansion marks another step as Leander works to improve infrastructure and support a growing population.
