Four suburbs in the Austin metro area have landed on SmartAsset’s 2025 list of the safest suburbs in the country. Cedar Park earned the highest placement locally, ranked No. 55 nationwide.
Georgetown came in at No. 71, while Taylor and Round Rock were listed at No. 103 and No. 111, respectively. The list analyzed 360 suburbs located within 45 minutes of a major U.S. city.
Safety metrics reflect regional strengths
To compile the rankings, SmartAsset evaluated five safety-related factors: violent crime, property crime, drug overdose deaths, traffic fatalities, and rates of excessive drinking. Crime data was specific to each city, while the other indicators were measured at the county level.
All four Austin-area suburbs fall within Williamson County, where traffic fatalities average 8.74 per 100,000 residents, and 20.65 percent of adults report excessive drinking, according to the report.
Suburbs balance safety and affordability
SmartAsset noted that both safety and cost of living play a role in how families choose where to live. The report pointed out that many households are willing to pay more to live in a neighborhood where they feel physically secure, especially those with children. Still, researchers cautioned that safety trends can shift over time due to economic or policy changes.
Round Rock continues to stand out among the region's top performers. In addition to making SmartAsset’s list, it was recently named one of America’s safest cities in 2025 by MoneyGeek and was ranked No. 10 among the most affordable fast-growing cities nationwide.
Georgetown has also gained attention for its rapid growth and relative affordability, attracting new residents seeking suburban living near Austin.
