Expanding into defense technology

Cedar Park-based Firefly Aerospace has announced plans to acquire national security technology company SciTec Inc. in a deal valued at $855 million. The acquisition will include a $300 million cash payment and $555 million in Firefly stock, issued at $50 per share. Firefly expects the purchase to close by the end of 2025.

About SciTec

Headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, SciTec specializes in advanced defense and intelligence technologies including missile detection, surveillance, and national security software. Firefly plans to integrate SciTec’s tools into its operations to expand its defense and space capabilities. The acquisition will allow Firefly to incorporate remote sensing, mission-focused software, and AI-enhanced data systems to improve response time and operational performance.

SciTec was awarded a $259 million U.S. Space Force contract earlier this year to advance military tracking and detection systems.

Leadership perspectives

Jim Lisowski, CEO of SciTec, said the partnership aligns with both companies’ focus on innovation and national defense. “We believe Firefly is the best home for our business and people. We share a unique focus on providing differentiated, leading-edge solutions to our customers,” he said.

Jason Kim, Firefly Aerospace’s CEO, said the acquisition will strengthen Firefly’s ability to serve defense clients. “The acquisition of SciTec enhances our ability to support a growing number of defense missions and provides us with a significant operational advantage,” Kim said.

Recent developments

Firefly has made several major moves in 2025. The company went public in July, raising more than $800 million through its initial public offering. However, its share price dipped nearly 30% following a September 29 rocket test explosion at its Briggs facility. No injuries or facility damage were reported.

The SciTec deal marks another step in Firefly’s effort to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its role in both commercial and government space operations.
