Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has opened the West Infill project, a major addition to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The expansion adds over 75,000 square feet across four levels and includes a new TSA Checkpoint that will begin operations on February 23, 2026.
Expansion details
Part of the airport’s ongoing Journey With AUS program, the West Infill improves passenger experience and operational efficiency for more than 21 million travelers each year, reaching this milestone five years ahead of projections in the AUS 2040 Master Plan. The project was launched after passenger growth surged in 2022, providing additional TSA capacity ahead of a planned centralized checkpoint.
Features and upgrades
The expansion includes a TSA Checkpoint designed for eight lanes, a 1.5-mile outbound baggage handling system capable of processing 4,000 bags per hour, and three new ticketing counters. It also adds airline and operational spaces, staff offices, and passenger amenities. Art and design features include all six pieces from the Voyages series and the reinstallation of the Austin Downtown Cruiser. Sustainability improvements target an Austin Energy Green Building 3-star rating, with energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible materials. Infrastructure upgrades include a separate HVAC system, new elevators, and modernized mechanical, electrical, and IT systems.
Project funding and completion
Valued at $241 million, the project was financed with airport revenues, future revenue bonds, FAA grants, and $15.99 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, without using taxpayer funds. Whiting-Turner served as the prime contractor, Gensler as architect, and AECOM as subject matter expert. The West Infill was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
