A local dream on the rails

Born from the imagination of a husband-and-wife team in 2003, Cedar Rock Railroad is a true Central Texas treasure. Located at 390 Borho in Leander, this charming, privately built miniature railway winds through scenic trails at Brushy Creek Lake Park. What began as one couple’s dream to create a simple, family-friendly escape has grown into a beloved destination where kids and parents alike can slow down and enjoy the ride.

What they offer

The railroad’s signature attraction is its 15-minute ride aboard the new 2025 train, Juniper, a breezy tour through 1.3 miles of shaded track where riders might spot local wildlife along the way. The ride is open to all ages, and even pets are welcome aboard. Tickets are just $3.95 per round trip, keeping the fun affordable for families.

Around the station, visitors will find plenty to explore. The Shady Oak Junction depot offers tickets, snacks, and souvenirs, while picnic pads provide shaded spots for lunch or parties. Kids can climb aboard the Imagine Railroad playscape or race friends on the hand-pedal cars nearby. With wide paths, plenty of shade, and friendly conductors, it’s a place built for relaxed family adventures.

The experience

Cedar Rock Railroad has the kind of nostalgic charm that makes you want to linger. The sound of the whistle, the crunch of gravel underfoot, and the laughter of kids chasing the train bring a sense of old-fashioned joy. Whether you’re here for a quick ride or an afternoon picnic, it’s the kind of spot that turns a regular day into a lasting memory.
